Rodent Awareness Week: Six Telltale Signs of a Rodent Infestation

Rodent

As temperatures drop this fall, rodents start seeking food, water, and shelter – and your home could be their next stop. According to the National Pest Management Association, around 21 million homes are invaded by rodents each year. These intruders are more than just a seasonal nuisance – they pose health risks and can lead to costly property damage if not addressed promptly.

Here are six telltale signs of rodent activity every homeowner should watch for:

Droppings:

Rodents tend to leave droppings near food storage areas, under sinks, inside cardboard boxes, along baseboards, and on wall beams.

Gnaw Marks:

Rodents chew through nearly any material to access food or water. They may also gnaw on electrical wires behind walls, increasing the risk of house fires.

Nests:

House mice build nests using shredded paper, fabric, wall insulation, and other soft materials. If you find scattered nest-building supplies, rodents may be nearby.

Tracks or Rub Marks:

Look for dark, greasy streaks along walls or baseboards. These marks form as rodents follow their regular paths between their nest and food sources.

Strange Noises:

Hearing scratching, scurrying, or squeaking sounds—especially at night—can indicate rodents moving between walls or in attics.

An Actual Rodent:

If you spot one mouse, there are likely more nearby. A female mouse can give birth to six babies every three weeks, adding up to 35 young per year.
